MEDINA COUNTY FAIR

80’S AND NEWER DEMOLITION DERBY

RULES AND REGULATIONS

Monday, July 30, 2012

Cars may be brought in after 12:00 p.m. the day of the Demo Derby on the north end of the infield.

In the interest of safety, anyone entering is subject to and must obey the following rules and regulations set up by the Medina County Fair Board, where the event is being held.

*****DRIVER’S ENTRY*****

1.       Each Driver must be a licensed driver of at least 18 years of age and (1) Fill out and sign entry form and (2) Sign a waiver of Liability.  The Medina County Fair Board reserves the right to approve or reject any and all entries.

2.       Entry deadlines are JULY 20, 2012 AT 4:00 P.M. or when all spaces are filled.  Mail entries must be postmarked by July 14, 2012.     A $30 entry fee must accompany entry form. (Make checks payable to Medina County Fair).  There is no retainer fee.  If entries are made after July 20, 2012, the entry fee is $40.

3.       Each entrant will receive one (1) Wristband.  They must be put on as you enter through the gate.  Broken wrist bands will be replaced one for one.  Deputies will be patrolling the infield (pit) area and anyone not wearing a wristband will be removed from the pit area.  All other people entering the pits will be required to purchase a wrist band prior to entry in the pits.

4.       ALL drivers must supply their own car and have proof of ownership (Title or Bill of Sale) at time of inspection. (NO PROOF OF OWNERSHIP, NO RUN)

5.       One entry per driver. Persons may sponsor more than one car, but each driver drives in one heat race only, except the Feature Race, Sub Compact and Consolation Heats.  Car numbers will be drawn at the time of inspection.

6.       NO DRINKING OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES OR CONSUMPTION OF ANY IMPAIRING SUBSTANCE ON TRACK AND/OR INFIELD.  THE MEDINA COUNTY FAIR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SEARCH ANY VEHICLE ENTERING THE INFIELD.

7.       Any driver not obeying rules will be disqualified.

8.       All drivers’ mechanics, helpers, etc. will answer to the Pit Steward or will be subject to disqualification.

9.       Once on the track, drivers are to answer to the Presiding Track Official or Officials.

Inspection of the cars will start at noon  the day of the Demo Derby and will end at 5:00 p.m.  We will have out of county inspectors doing inspection in an INSPECTION AREA where only authorized people are allowed.  All cars that pass inspection will be given a “stick” and put in their heat line.  No vehicles other than derby cars are permitted in the same area as the heat lines.

*****PARTICIPATION RULES*****

  1. Any STOCK American made 1980 or newer hardtop may be used.  No limousines, hearses, ambulances, convertibles, truck chassis, van, jeeps, four wheelers, checkers.  2003 and newer Ford Motor Company full-size cars, ie Crown Vic, Interceptor, Grand Marquis allowed – MUST HAVE ORIGINAL FACTORY FRONT CRADLE, FRONT SUSPENSION AND STEERING.
  2. Drivers must wear a crash helmet with shield or eye protection, (full face helmet is recommended) long pants and long sleeve shirt.  Seat belts are required, shoulder harness is optional.  Driver will not extend any part of his/or her body outside of the car at any time while the heat is running.
  3. Cars must be clean.  Wheel balance weights must be removed.  All glass including head and tail lights MUST BE REMOVED BEFORE ENTERING THE TRACK INFIELD, as well as ALL CHROME TRIM Door handle, locks, window trim ETC. The windshield may be left in place. GLASS MUST BE REMOVED FROM INSIDE OF THE CAR AND DOORS. Trunk and inside must be empty and no weight of any kind may be added. Example: No junk tires, wheels, metal parts, glass, etc.  (PLEASE DO NOT DUMP PARTS ON INFIELD)
  4. No Profanity painted on the cars.
  5. BOTH front doors must be painted completely white and a 36”X36” white square is to be painted on the roof of the car before the car enters the pit area.  The officials will paint assigned numbers on these areas in black at the time of inspection.
  6. All cars must have BRAKES before inspection and the start of the heat. 
  7. Engine mounts may be chained or welded.  Engine swapping is allowed; GM to FORD, FORD to CHEVY, etc. Compacts must have 4 cylinder.  Headers must exit straight up through the hood.  Distributor protector may be used, but only bolted to motor & trans.  THERE MUST BE 1 ½ INCHES BETWEEN THE FIREWALL AND BACK OF PROTECTOR, NO EXCEPTIONS!!!! No kickers to inside cage, bar, frame or body.  Motor plate may be used, cannot be attached to firewall, (FRAME ONLY) must be 1 ½ inch clearance between firewall and motor plate.  Motorplate may be braced with 1 brace on each corner extending 3” from corners and ½” thick max.
  8. DRIVERS COMPARTMENTMay have MAX 3” diameter pipe behind the driver’s seat and across the dash.  NO kickers to the floor or firewall.  Driver’s door may be reinforced with a door bar.  Passenger side may have bar inside driver’s compartment, BUT MUST NOT TOUCH ANY PART OF THE BODY.
  9. Gas tanks must be constructed of heavy gauge steel, such as Freon bottles, or heavy gauge pipe. We will not honor GI cans, lawn mower gas cans, or boat tanks, or anything else along this line for a tank. A maximum of five (5) gallons of gas will be allowed. ALL TANKS will have steel straps around or brackets WELDED to the tank, which will be SECURED TO THE FLOOR. We will not accept rope, wire, or any type of rubber tie downs. All tanks will be secured to the floor behind the driver’s seat, in the rear seat area. It will be as close to the center of the car as possible and not any further back than the back of where the original seat was mounted. This includes Station Wagons.  Gas tank protectors may be used and will BE NO WIDER THAN THE INSIDE OF THE FRAME & 2”OFF FROM THE REAR PANEL. NO KICKERS ALLOWED IN ANY DIRECTION. 3”+3” – ¼ MAX. THICKNESS OF MATERIAL (PIPE, TUBE, CHANNEL, ETC)  (THIS IS NOT TO BE FOR FRAME ROLL REINFORCEMENT) Also the GAS LINE (if kept in driver’s compartment) MUST BE RUN THROUGH A LARGER HOSE OR PIPE. IF the line is run under the car, no protection is required. Also, the tanks will be covered with floor material or of similar material.  Electric fuel pump may be used, must have on and off switch to be marked in red to indicate cut-off switch.  THE PIT STEWARD WILL CHECK ALL OF THE ABOVE AND NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE.
  10. One standard automotive battery only.  No truck or industrial batteries.  It must be SECURELY fastened before inspection on passenger side floor.  Solenoid, regulator, modules, etc. may be moved, but must remain under the hood and in front of the firewall.  Battery must be covered prior to going through inspection.
  11. Trans cooler may be used, must have some type of shield protecting driver in case of cooler rupture.  All cooler lines must be covered.  IF TRANSMISSION MOUNT IS MOVED, A 6” MOUNT ON EACH SIDE OF FRAME IS MAX.
  12. FRAME:  MUST BE STOCK, NO plating frame for ANY reason inside or out.  No re-welding frame seams anywhere for any reason.  Body mounts must remain in place or replace with like material.  NO STEEL SPACERS body bolts may be changed no larger than 5/8 bolt with 3” by 3” washer.  Notching or pre-bending the frame is allowed.  Strap or chain may be used from hump to hump but cannot go around the axle.  HUMP STRAP MAY BE USED, TOP OF STRAP MUST BE AT LEAST 3” FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE HUMP, 3” WIDE AND 24” LEMGTH, 1/4” THICK MAX STRAP SIZE, ONE STRAP PER SIDE.  This rule does NOT apply to compact cars.   If frame is prebent or notched NO adding metal or welding permitted at bend point.
  13. SUSPENSION:  Must be stock.  No welding shocks, no air shocks.  No truck rear ends; 5 lug only must be automotive type.  Trailing arms on rear must be stock appearing (No square tube or boxing upper or lower).  Rear coil springs may be wired or welded only to hold coil spring in place; CANNOT be welded solid.  Chaining or bolting is allowed if chained the chain cannot be welded (chain links must move).  NO LEAF SPRING CONVERSIONS.  Front A-arm CANNOT BE WELDED.  Coil spring swap is permitted. Chaining or bolting is allowed. If chained, the chain cannot be welded (chain links must move).

2003 & NEWER CROWN VICS ARE ALLOWED – MUST HAVE ORIGINAL FACTORY FRONT CRADLE, FRONT SUSPENSION AND STEERING.

  1. BUMPERS:  may be welded to plate and plate welded to frame. NO EXTRA PLATE OR BRACING, IF FRONT FRAME IS CUT SHORT THERE MUST BE A 1” INSPECTION HOLE IN FRAME BEHIND THE BUMPER. ANY YEAR FACTORY STOCK BUMPER (NO MANUFACTURED AFTER MARKET BUMPERS).  ENDS MUST BE CUT OFF FRONT AND REAR BUMPERS.  NO ROLLING ENDS AND WELDING SOLID.
  2. TIRES:  Any AUTOMOTIVE type tire may be used.  Must have DOT NUMBER and be street legal.  No loading tires, no wheel weights, no studded tires.  Valve stem protectors may be used.
  3. BODY:  No inner body seam welding for any reasons.  Doors and trunk may be welded, but not solid.  MAX. 12”-4” plate or welds and skip 12”.  If trunk is welded must have hole for inspection.  Trunk cannot be welded to bumper or tucked inside of body.  NO WEDGING OR TUCKING, BODY CANNOT BE WELDED TO BUMPER. 16” MIN REAR BUMPER HEIGHT FROM BOTTOM TO BUMPER.  Trunk lids are either on or off – NO alterations.  (Stock position or none at all.)   Hoods may be wired in 4 places must be opened for inspection.  2 front hood pins may go through core support and frame 5/8 rod MAX. Rear speaker deck must remain in stock position or removed completely, is speaker deck is removed only 2 chains or 2 wires permitted to floor.  2 chains, 2 wires, 2 bars ONLY in front and rear window, rear bar can only go to speaker deck.  Hoods must have a hole 20” over carburetor and be able to opened for inspection.
  4. RADIATOR:  Must be stock type radiator and remain in original position.  NO ANTIFREEZE.  If the heater core is removed, the hole in the firewall must be covered.
  5. Two deflection bars made of 1/8”x2” flat bar or heavy gauge pipe (no conduit).  It must be bolted (no welding) with at least 3/8” diameter bolts, to the roof and to the firewall area, metal to metal.  This is to protect the driver if the hood should enter the car; also, to protect from another car entering through the windshield. 
  6. IF IT DOESN'T SAY IT IN THE RULES, DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

*****RACE ITSELF*****

1.       The race will start at 7:00pm  Monday (80’s and newer). Cars will be in the pit area, and have their final inspection two hours before each derby starting time. At 5:00, all inspections will be closed.  The entry to the pit will also be closed.  We will race, rain or shine.

2.       Prior to the derby we will have a contest for the best appearing car.  Judges will pick six cars from all the entries to be judged by the spectators.  The winner will receive $25 and a trophy.

3.       There will be four flags used during the race:  Green – GO, Red – STOP, Pink – Playing Possum, Drive more aggressively, Black – Disqualified for the night

4.       Names of drivers should be given to the Pit Steward at least 1½ hours before the first heat. Driver changes will be permitted only with permission from the Pit Steward and new application made out and waiver of liability has been signed.

5.       NO CARS ARE PERMITTED ON THE TRACK BEFORE THE HEAT IN WHICH THEY PARTICIPATE.

6.       Drivers may maneuver forward or backward.  NO DELIBERATE HITTING ON THE DRIVER’S DOOR.

7.       A time limit will be announced to the judges. If a driver does not hit another car within that time limit he/she will be disqualified. DO NOT PLAY POSSUM or this will lead to disqualification.

8.       Boundaries will be observed.  DO NOT PUSH CARS OUT OF THE RACING AREA!! PLEASE STAY IN YOUR CARS TILL AFTER HEAT RACE IS OVER!!!!!!!!!

9.       We will race start to finish with no stopping unless an emergency exists. Any car stalled, boxed in, or stuck will not be helped to re-enter the race unless otherwise decided by the Judges.  The decisions of the Judges are final.

10.    When red rotating beacons flash, all cars must stop in their tracks.  DO NOT MOVE AN INCH.  Any cars moving will be automatically disqualified.

11.    Any car spilling gas or catching on fire is automatically disqualified.

12.    PROTEST FEE: Protest procedures against vehicle alterations are available for a fee of $150, refundable upon verification of fact.

13.    JUDGES WILL DISQUALIFY ANY CAR THEY FEEL HAS BEEN RESHAPED FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF WEAKENING OR STRENGTHENING THE STRUCTURE.

14.    With the approval of the Pit Steward, if any heat winning car will not start for the feature, the driver may borrow another car.  This information will be given to the announcer as soon as possible.  If no other car is operable, the driver will be scratched from the race.

15.    DECISION OF THE OFFICIAL JUDGES WILL BE FINAL.

16.     ANY DISQUALIFICATIONS ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR ANY PRIZE MONEY IN THE HEAT OR THE FEATURE.

17.    Each of the last two moving cars in each heat will be declared winners of that heat.  Each will receive $50 and a trophy and will be eligible for the feature race.  The feature race winner will receive a large championship trophy and $3000.  The place winners are as follows: 2nd-$1000; 3rd-$500; 4th-$200; 5th-$100.

18.    There will be ONE consolation heat if we get a minimum of six (6) cars each.  We will pay first place $50 and a trophy, and second place $25 and a trophy in the heat.

19.    First place winners of a Consolation heat will be eligible for the Feature.

20.    No electronic communication devices allowed during any of the races.

21.    ALL DRIVERS must wear long sleeve shirts and long pants for their protection.

****  SUB COMPACT  ****

We are having a sub compact heat during the Monday derby.  We will take cars that have only four cylinder engines such as Pintos, Vegas, Chevettes, Toyotas, Datsuns, Hondas, VWs, etc. WITH WHEELBASE THAT DOES NOT EXCEED 103.5” on a first come, first serve basis.  All cars to be two-wheel drive.  Four-wheel drive must have two wheels in operation.

The rules will be the same as the regular Full Size derby.  There will be a 30-minute time limit.  If the race is completed, the first place winner will receive $200 and a trophy; second place will receive $100 and a trophy.

First place winners of the Sub Compact heat will be eligible for the Feature as long as they can find a Full Size car that was run in that night’s derby.

NOTE: To enter the sub compact heat, use the special sub compact entry form.  The first entries we receive will be the participants for this event.  These people will be notified immediately so they will have plenty of time to get their car ready.

ANY CAR NOT HAULED OFF THE FAIR GROUNDS BY 12:00 NOON, THE DAY AFTER THE RESPECTIVE DERBY, WILL BECOME THE PROPERTY OF THE MEDINA COUNTY FAIR. THE DRIVER WILL BE SUSPENDED FROM ALL DERBIES AT THE MEDINA COUNTY FAIR FOR A PERIOD OF ONE YEAR.
